Association for Supervision Curriculum and Development  (ASCD)

1. What is the Association for Supervision Curriculum and Development (ASCD)?

ASCD is a membership organization that develops programs, products, and services essential to the way educators learn, teach, and lead.

2. What are ASCD Affiliates?

ASCD affiliates are separate organizations located in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and East Asia that work collaboratively as part of the ASCD community to foster common values and goals by:

  • Exploring state and local education issues.
  • Honing leadership skills.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities.

3. What are connected communities?

Connected communities are one of the formal structures in which ASCD members provide leadership for self-organized groups within the ASCD community. Rather than employing a standard Association template to administer the groups, connected communities are designed from the educator's perspective to both meet local needs and enrich the overall ASCD community.

4. How does the ASCD implement and deliver effective professional development to its membership?

a) ASCD delivers comprehensive effective professional development through:

  • Direct focus on helping students achieve learning goals and supporting student learning needs.
  • A collaborative endeavor- teachers and administrators work together in planning and implementation.
  • A long-term commitment.
  • Differentiated instruction.

b) The content of professional development programs is based on organizational needs. Research and best practice show that for continuous improvement, schools should focus on the following categories:

  • Instructional Leadership.
  • Instructional practices.
  • Assessment.
  • Curriculum Development.
  • Understanding the learning process.
