The Standard of Excellence in Teacher Preparation

2010

Dear Colleagues,

It is with much excitement and enthusiasm that I bring you greetings and a brief introduction regarding the work I will be engaged in over the next year. My name is Boyce Courtney Williams and I am currently vice-president for International/MENA Relations. In May 2009 the Executive Board of National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) authorized me to conduct a one year feasibility study relative to the readiness of the MENA Nations to pursue accreditation by NCATE. Having worked at NCATE over 15 years and had as my primary responsibility, supporting Institutions through the accreditation process, I feel very qualified to undertake this most important task.

During my tenure at Zayed, I will travel throughout the MENA Region to conduct interviews with Sheikhs, heads of state, education officials and other stakeholders. For your immediate study I have included a brief overview of NCATE, outlining its value and importance as an overall quality assurance mechanism. In addition you will see that there is a Continuum for Educator Preparation that outlines the beginning steps from teacher candidate, to teacher to advanced educator. I hope that you find this information helpful. You can learn more about NCATE at www.ncate.org.

I look forward to meeting each of you and sharing ideas, thoughts and insight as we work together to  create a unified system of accreditation, accountability and professional development.

Sincerely,

Boyce Courtney Williams, Ph.D.
